APO Group (www.APO-opa.com), the leading pan-African communications consultancy and press release distribution service, is delighted to announce that it has won a prestigious PRovoke Africa SABER Award for its campaign with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) (www.IOM.int) to reward ethical and responsible reporting on migration in Africa.
The SABER award recognizes APO Group and IOM’s commitment to improving global perceptions of migration issues in Africa. In tandem, the two organizations coordinated a journalism competition that drew submissions from across the continent, with eight winning journalists receiving their prizes at a virtual press event that also included a discussion on the challenges of reporting on migration. .
The PRovoke Africa SABER Awards are the leading public relations awards in Africa. Held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the 2022 SABER Awards attracted over 2,000 entries from PR agencies across the continent. A jury of industry leaders chaired by PRovoke Media founder Paul Holmes was looking for campaigns that were brave, authentic, shareable and captivating – and Project Migration won APO Group and IOM the SABER award in the category “Associations”.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is part of the United Nations system and is the primary intergovernmental organization promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. IOM was established in 1951 and is present in over 100 countries.
The IOM Regional Office for West and Central Africa commissioned APO Group to launch a competition for African journalists reporting on migration.
The competition (https://bit.ly/3NiMzra) was designed to recognize outstanding stories from the region that shed light on migration from a variety of perspectives, including safe migration, climate change and the reintegration of returning migrants.
Debunking false and discriminatory narratives about migration in Africa was of particular importance to APO Group and IOM. The competition asked journalists to submit stories that demonstrated balanced, evidence-based reporting and gave the public a clearer picture of the real issues.
With an unrivaled reputation for media relations in Africa and a wide reach in all 54 African countries, the APO Group project team was able to promote the competition to journalists across the continent. But with the logistical challenges caused by the pandemic, they had to adopt a purely virtual campaign, with the submission process, press events and assembly of four thematic juries all coordinated online.
Despite this, campaign results were exceptional, with 230 quality submissions received in English and French, total PR value generated of over $19 million, and the virtual awards ceremony broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube.
“When we launched this campaign, it was essential that we had a partner who understood African media and had deep contacts to attract submissions across West and Central Africa,” said Mia Barrett, manager. sensitization at the IOM regional office for West and Central Africa. Central Africa. “We are thrilled with this SABER award as it demonstrates the importance of our mission to change the narrative on migration in Africa.”
“APO Group has always stood for fair and balanced reporting, so it is fantastic that we are able to give greater prominence to compelling African stories that provide real insight into migration. We are extremely grateful to IOM for the opportunity to participate in this campaign, and share its determination to reward ethical journalism and shine a light on what is an important issue,” said APO Group Founder and Chairman , Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard.
