Mountain bike tours to raise funds for the library

Mathias Bogaert, the Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town, with the participants in the first of three mountain bike tours on Sunday 19 September.

When news broke that the fire that broke out on the slopes of Table Mountain at the end of April this year destroyed the Jagger Library on the University of Cape Town campus, the world whole noticed it.

Belgian university staff and librarians, in particular, understood the pain and loss that the University of Louvain library had burned twice in the last century – in 1914 and 1940. To show their support, they have launched a fundraising campaign, Move for Cape Town, to raise money for the rebuilding of the Jagger Library.

Eager to contribute to this initiative, Mathias Bogaert, Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town, launched an invitation both to the Belgian community and to the entire Cape Town community to join them in one of the three hikes by mountain bike in support of the campaign. .

Together, the objective is to cover 1,000 km on mountain bikes and collect 50,000 R. Three mountain bike circuits have been organized. The first, which took place in Kirstenbosch from Black Box Coffeeworks in Constantia Nek, was held last weekend on Sunday, September 19.

“It was such a beautiful day. Get to know new people and ride together for a good cause. Even though I am a newbie in the world of mountain biking, I will definitely join at least one of the other circuits that will be organized next month, ”says Nicolas D’hanis, intern at the Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town.

The dates of the next tours are Sunday October 3 and Sunday October 17. The participants of the second tour will meet at the Bootleggers Coffee Shop at Forest Glade House in Tokai. The Franschhoek tour is the last on the list with participants invited to meet at Droom Guesthouse. Participants will first have a coffee at 9:00 a.m. with a kick-off around 9:30 a.m.

Each circuit has two different trails; one for bikers / social beginners and one for more advanced mountain bikers. A visit will take two to two and a half hours and each trail forms a loop. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Participants are requested to take note that an activity permit will be required for certain trails. Participants must have or rent their own mountain bike.

Those who wish to contribute can do so by joining Team Belgium for one or more tours or by making a donation via the following link: https://forms.kuleuven.be/c0001/fondsen/219/donate/fr.

The organizers aim for a contribution of R500 per visit and per participant.
