June 02, 2022 – Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) handed over essential medical supplies to health facilities in Djizzak to help the region in its fight against tuberculosis (TB). Representatives from the USAID Mission in Uzbekistan, the National Center for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, and the Djizzak Regional Health Administration participated in the handover.
Through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Health, USAID, and other international partners, Uzbekistan has made great strides in reducing TB cases and associated deaths, but multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) continues to be a significant problem in the country. . USAID works to reduce the burden of TB in Uzbekistan and Central Asia by building local and regional capacity to improve detection and treatment of multidrug-resistant TB.
“Today’s event demonstrates the continued partnership between USAID and Uzbekistan to improve health services throughout the country, including Djizzak. By working together, we can improve the health and well-being of Uzbek citizens,” said Cherry Gumapas, Director of USAID/Uzbekistan’s Health Development Office, during the handover ceremony.
The equipment, valued at around $75,000, included electronic thermometers, stethoscopes, optical equipment and pulse oximeters. These instruments will help healthcare providers in the region provide efficient and timely care, provide timely diagnosis and treat patients with chronic conditions.
The medical equipment was donated by an American manufacturer, Welch Allyn, as part of USAID’s End Tuberculosis in Central Asia activity. The equipment will be used at the Regional Center for the Fight against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases in Djizzak, in tuberculosis dispensaries, hospitals and outpatient facilities in the Djizzak region.
