Walkathon held in Chennai to mark 75 years of Indo-Russian diplomatic relations

Marking 75 years of Indo-Russian diplomatic relations, a friendship march was held on Besant Nagar beach in Chennai on Saturday. The one-kilometre-long walkathon saw the presence of the Director and Vice-Advisor of the Russian Consulate General, Gennadil A Rogalev, accompanied by Thangappan, Secretary General of the Indo-Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

People taking part in the walkathon were seen holding Indian and Russian flags in their hands, as a sign of friendship. Speaking on the occasion, Rogalev said the march was dedicated to the celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Russia. He extended his best wishes to all Indian citizens, adding that he hoped their relations would continue to grow stronger in the future.

However, the Russian Consulate General refrained from commenting on the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war. “I think we should focus on our relationships and not think about other people,” he said.

In addition, Rogalev mentioned that the Indo-Russian friendship will lead to many growth opportunities in the field of industrial development which can extend to other spheres like culture and science, which is in the interest of both nations. He stressed the continuation and strengthening of their mutual cooperation. Stating that Russia is a “safe country”, Rogalev expressed his wish to see more and more Indians coming to Russia in the near future.

Notably, India has traditionally remained a reliable strategic partner of Russia and remembers Moscow’s help to India in the most difficult times of the past. Indo-Russian relations have been the cornerstone of India’s foreign policy. Indo-Russian relations benefit from increased levels of cooperation in almost all areas of bilateral relations, including politics, security, defence, trade and economy, science and technology, and culture.
